Our regular slides had been "Pride-ified" by David K. That one colorful tweak conveyed whimsy, and a sense that this service was not like the others. It gave us a spark of magic in a service that was about joy.
It got me thinking about those little touches around our church, and in our own lives, that are often noticed and appreciated, but not remarked upon. The pillows donated to the Library to add color (and help with back support for those who need them). Stickers handed out for fun. Flowers on the chancel, treats and donuts brought in to go with our coffee.
I imagine in your own family you had examples of this. (Or maybe you ARE the magic-maker.) Special holiday traditions, little rituals, unaccustomed treats. My mother was clever, or maybe I just wasn't very smart--we didn't have a toaster, only an oven, and so when I was a child and whined for those PopTarts I saw advertised on tv, she explained that they wouldn't work for us.
BUT when we went on vacation, we often stayed at a motel with a kitchenette so we could make our own meals. I would buzz straight in there, because if they had a toaster, I would be allowed to get a coveted box of Pop Tarts. And so this became an association I have with vacations.
This summer, what are the little tweaks, the out-of-the-ordinary touches that will make something ordinary into something special?
