Adult Basic Education
Who are these classes for?
If you are an adult who needs help with reading and writing, these classes are for you! Some of our students want to learn to read so they can get a better job. Other students want to help their children with homework. Some of our students can read a little, but are afraid to write emails at work because their writing isn't strong. It does not matter how much or how little you can read and write; we will start where you are and help you improve your skills and abilities.
What happens in class?
Our lessons are designed so that adults of all reading levels can participate. Whether you are just learning the alphabet or if you can already read a little but want to improve, we can help! You will learn new vocabulary, practice reading short stories, and writing about what you read. We also work together to read longer books based on what the students are interested in reading. In the past, we have read Harry Potter, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Power of Having Fun, based on student suggestions.

When and where do classes meet?

If you are learning English and looking for additional language support, we also offer ESL classes for adults.
Are you interested in volunteer opportunities?
We always need volunteers in our literacy programs! Some volunteers serve as classroom teachers or one-on-one tutors; others work behind the scenes, listening to students’ recordings and providing feedback. Some volunteers help with administrative tasks, such as making copies and organizing materials for new students. Let us know where you are most comfortable, and we will find a way to help!
