On Tuesday afternoon, March 31, the Day of Trans Recognition, I received an invitation from one of the planners of the upcoming Pride Festival to go to Leander High School to show support for trans students as they were leaving school that day. The day before, there had been several people who had shown up at Leander High School holding up anti-trans signs. I confirmed that there had been some anti-trans protesters present on Monday and then sent out an invitation to members of the LGBTQIA+ justice team and to Live Oak UU Happenings. There was very little notice and I was the only one from Live Oak who could attend. But, there ended up being 40 people present. There were lots of signs and several large pride flags. We were quite visible. Many of the cars driving by honked their horns enthusiastically, waved, and/or gave us thumbs-up signs. I counted only 4 cars that gave us a thumbs-down sign. It made my heart soar!
Rev. Joanna is on sabbatical through May 5.
