“What I Did This Summer”

I’m back! It’s been a full summer for me. I’ve already written about going to UUA General Assembly this June, but connecting with UUs around the country continued in July at the Central East Region Summer Institute held on the Oberlin campus in Ohio, then guest preaching at West Shore UU Church. Serving Unitarian Universalism outside our own congregation is an expectation of ministers and one that I feel strengthens us. There is always bonus learning that accompanies such traveling, and this year, it was rich, such as being able to attend a week-long workshop on mission-based governance and being able to observe how another congregation does their worship services. (By the way, if you travel, I encourage you to attend the UU church at your destination – and bring me back some of their materials!)

After that, I had some vacation time, much appreciated after this past year, which included seeing my two best friends, visiting the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Philadelphia Museum of Art, and having a genuine Philly cheesesteak.

The workshop on mission fired up many questions that I’ve had on my mind, namely, “why does Live Oak UU Church exist?” I have my answers, but this next year, I want to hear your answers. This is a different congregation than the one I began serving with 11 years ago. How have we changed, how has the area around us changed, and how has the world changed? I think I have a pretty good handle on that last question, but I hope to dive deeper with you about the first two.

Our official new “church year” begins on September 7, but August will be full of events and preparation. I’d like to personally invite you to join me for three of those:

This Sunday, August 10, after the worship service: Exploring Membership. Interested in becoming a member, or simply learning more about this congregation and Unitarian Universalism? Grab a cup of coffee after the service and join us in the library. Approx time: 11:10-12:30

Saturday, August 16, 10:00 am in the sanctuary: Worship Leader Training. Interested in serving as a worship leader? Join me as we go over the new worship script and pick up tips/tricks for helping me leading Sunday services.

Saturday, August 23, 11:00 am: Gen X Lunch Gathering. Do you identify as Generation X? Join me and Renee G. for a special Gen X Lunch Gathering— a relaxed space for exploring how our generation’s unique experiences shape the way we connect with others and build community.
