This Sunday, a convergence of traditions will hit Live Oak: we will raise our maypole and weave ribbons around it in a dance done for hundreds of years. We will eat together in the “guided potluck” of our nacho bar. And we will bid with gusto on items and events in our Service Auction.
Service Auctions are a longstanding tradition in many Unitarian Universalist congregations, going back decades. I imagine they’ve been popular because everyone in the congregation can donate something – babysitting, lessons, house repair, parties, etc. And they’re popular because it’s fun bidding against each other to win something fun or useful. As fundraisers go, this is one of the most fun. It’s a way of financially supporting the church and getting a little sumpin’ in return. (Much better than a tote bag!)
Some congregations have been doing this annually for so long that they have great big multi-page catalogs. They’re able to do more programs because of the proceeds of the auction.
We’re not quite at that level yet, but if we continue doing this on a yearly basis, I believe we will be. As it is, so many have donated generously that I feel confident a good time will be had by all.
The service auction takes place after the worship service. To nourish you and your energy for bidding, we’re having a potluck nacho bar. Can you bring something? You can either cook something like queso or taco meat or purchase something like tortilla chips or salsa. You can sign up here: Nacho Bar Potluck.
The theme of the day is “Spring Fiesta” – dress accordingly! 🙂
