Fighting for Our Values

Occasionally, I’ll get a question about the line between politics and religion, and what it means to our church and to Unitarian Universalism. I don’t believe it is possible at the present time to advocate for our UU values without addressing the actions being taken by government/political officials. I absolutely will argue that hey, they came into our lane!

One illustration of that was the recent announcement that churches would no longer be considered “sensitive locations” and that the government would have no problem coming into our space with a view to arresting those who could not show official papers of citizenship. Today, the Unitarian Universalist Association, along with 26 other religious bodies including the Quakers, Episcopalians, Reform Jews, UCC, and others sued the current administration over this change in policy. As UUA Executive Vice-President Carey McDonald says, “As Unitarian Universalists, fighting for justice and liberation for all people is at the heart of our faith tradition, which recognizes the spark of the divine inherent in every person. Our sacred spaces must continue to offer sanctuary to those who face oppression, violence, or alienation, including immigrant communities.” You can read more about this lawsuit here.

We are fighting closer to home, too. Monday, March 17, is Texas UU Legislative Action Day at the Texas Capitol. That day, you’ll have the opportunity to meet with your legislator, gather with other UUs in your legislative district, and hear about what is happening this legislative session. You can register for this today (sign up soon to get a t-shirt!)

Our religious values are under attack. Not only will we not obey in advance, we will fight back – religiously.
